Group Lessons
There's not much worse than spending a beautiful day at your desk.
So if you have to suffer, why not treat yourself afterwards? Join us for our small group sailing lessons for adults on Thursday evenings this summer. The lessons will be aboard our 19' Flying Scot and be limited to small groups of up to four students per boat. These lessons are offered in one month/four lesson sessions in May, June, July, and August. Over the course of four lessons, you'll learn the basics of sailing theory, knots, boat handling, sail trim and steering with the tiller. Our goal is to have each student tacking with the tiller and the mainsheet by the end of the session. The dates and times of each session in 2024 will be:
-
May 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th (5:45pm start time)
-
June 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th (6pm start time)
-
July 3rd (Wed), 11th, 18th, 25th (6pm start time)
-
July 31st, August 7th, 16th, 23rd (5:45pm start time)

We may add a second boat or additional weeknight if there is high demand. Lessons are booked per month and students may not attend lessons outside of their month without purchasing a second session.

Can you really learn to sail in one day or a weekend?

No, you can't. In our humble opinion, anyone who claims that you'll feel safe, confident and comfortable sailing on your on after a day or a weekend of instruction is...good at marketing. Maybe we aren't, but we are great at teaching sailing and setting realistic expectations.
That being said, over the course of our one day clinics, you'll get the basics down. You'll walk away with an understanding of safety aboard a sailboat, basic sail theory, trimming the sails, using the tiller, and nautical terminology. These clinics won't make you an expert in a day, but they're a great way to start your sailing career.
Each clinic will cover the same topics. Our remaining dates for 2024 are:
-
Saturday, August 24th 8:30am- 4:30pm

The outline of our one day clinics is:
-
8:30am- 10am: Morning classroom session & rigging
-
10am-12pm: Morning on the water practice
-
12pm-12:30pm: Break for lunch
-
12:30pm-1:30pm: Afternoon classroom session
-
1:30pm-3:45pm: Afternoon on the water practice
-
3:45pm-4:30pm: Derigging & debrief

Please note that the times in this outline are subject to change.

What better way to start a lifetime of sailing?

Sailing is a lifelong skill, and the best sailors are almost always the ones who start young. Make your child's summer unforgettable. These group lessons are for students with some to no sailing experience.

Eventually we plan to add weekly lessons for kids, but at the moment, we don't have the staff to do so. For the time being, this is how group lessons for kids works:

-
Submit this form to provide us with information about your child(ren) and scheduling preferences.
-
Sit tight- once we have enough interested from children of similar ages, we'll reach out all of the parents to confirm pricing and schedule our lessons.
-
Your kids learn to sail!

Please note that by submitting this form you are not committed to booking lessons with us, and while we'll do our very best to make these lessons happen, we are unable to guarantee that this will be the case.

Luke was an incredible instructor. I knew nothing about sailing and he walked me through everything A to Z. I now feel like a pro! I highly recommend Moriches Island Sailing for anyone looking to learn and have fun out on the water: No one knows more about sailing than Luke, seriously.

Our sons were totally new to sailing last summer and they started with Moriches Island Sailing. The owner Luke is an expert sailor who is great with kids. The 1:1 instruction really made a difference. They learned a ton at each lesson and got plenty of hands on sailing time. I highly recommend the company - and private sailing instruction over sailing camp /group lessons.
